Eli Meyerhoff ("Beyond Education") delves into the many -- many -- scandals rocking higher education these days and sees the foundational problems underneath. Why do we prize college education so highly? What has devoting years of our lives and tens (hundreds) of thousands of debt done for us? Will the Democratic promise of free school do anything, or will it simply trap future generations in, or outside of, elitist power structures?

Also discussed: how the specter of the "dropout" -- a totally manufactured figure, constructed by those in power worried about a communist threat among organized working class folk -- keeps people trapped in systems that aren't working for them, what alternatives to the university system might exist, and why no one can decide what university education is supposed to do for a person.
